Welcome to the Albany Society of Engineers 

Enjoy a Tour of the Burden Iron Works

 

Date: Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Place: Burden Iron Works Museum, One East Industrial Parkway in Troy

Directions: Proceed East across the Troy – Menands Bridge (Rt. 378), take the left fork onto Route 4 (Burden Avenue), take the left onto Main Street and right onto East Industrial Parkway. You should immediately see the Museum.

Time: 5:15 PM - Please arrive at the Museum as Tour will begin shortly after you arrive

Optional Dinner at Brown’s Brewing Co. Restaurant – 417 River Road, Troy will follow immediately after the tour – Directions will be provided at the Museum

Tour: Burden Iron Works Museum – From our March 2009 Meeting – See the Corliss Steam Engine! and other historical artifacts

An exhibit on Greater Troy's industrial history is housed in the former office of the Burden Iron Works. Constructed in 1881, the distinguished brick Romanesque Revival building contains examples of objects manufactured in the city throughout the 19th century.

Tour Guide: P. Thomas Carroll, Ph.D., Executive Director, Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway

Tom is a member of the Albany Society of Engineers and has spoken to the group on several occasions in the past. He is a native of Princeton, New Jersey, and a cultural historian who specializes in the history of American science and technology. A graduate of Caltech and the University of Pennsylvania, he has headed the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway since January 1997, and has been Executive Director of RiverSpark, New York State’s first Heritage Area, since December 2002. Before that, he was Associate Professor of History in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and now holds adjunct appointments both there and in Rensselaer’s School of Architecture.

Who We Are 

Members

The Albany Society of Engineers is composed of persons of all ages actively engaged in or retired from the profession of engineering or kindred professions. Included are persons from government, communications, utilities, industries, commerce and private engineering practice.

Mission 

The Mission of the Albany Society of Engineers is the promotion of high professional standards in the practice of engineering and related science and technology in the community through the educational advancement of its members and the community. 

Meetings

The Albany Society of Engineers meets once a month from September through June. The meetings consists of a dinner followed by a presentation of a timely technical topic.  Usually, the May and June meetings are preceded by a field trip to a project, industrial or research facility.

Who Can Join

Membership is open to anyone with a technical background interested in promoting the advancement of knowledge and practice in engineering. Anyone interesting in joining may contact President John Grathwol or submit a Membership Application (PDF) or Membership Application  (Word).
